PUBLIC NOTICE
Agricultural Advisory Committee
Volunteer opportunities exist for Spallumcheen residents from the Agricultural Community (3 positions) and from the Public/Community at Large (2 positions) for those interested in serving on a Committee to develop an Agricultural Area Plan for the Township.
The primary function of the Committee is to oversee the development of an Agricultural Area Plan which will:
- Ensure the continuing sustainability of agriculture
- Improve agricultural viability
- Protect the character of the rural area
- Encourage and facilitate ‘good neighbour’ communications
- Minimize impacts of intensive agriculture
- Promote agricultural best practices, and
- Include an environmental farm program into the Area Plan.
Secondary functions include:
- Review manure waste management practices
- Review groundwater management issues pertinent to agriculture
- Incorporate the Agricultural Area Plan into the Official Community Plan
- Develop a communications plan to educate and inform the public, agricultural
producers, elected officials about the Agricultural Area Plan.
The Agricultural Advisory Committee will consist of 9 members including 2 Councillors, as well as representation from the Ministry of Agriculture (1) and the Agricultural Land Commission (1) who will be non-voting members of the committee.
Meetings are planned monthly during the development of the Agricultural Area Plan, then quarterly if the committee continues as an Advisory committee to Township Council.
Residents of Spallumcheen who are interested, and who would be able to volunteer time for an initial two year term for this initiative, are asked to send a letter indicating why they are interested in being appointed to the Agricultural Advisory Committee. The letter should indicate if the application is being made to represent the agricultural community or the public/community at large.
