Armstrong-Spallumcheen Parks and Recreation Commission Facilities
Surrounding the pool, is the Armstrong-Spallumcheen Memorial Park, which contains play ground equipment for all ages, beautiful flower beds, memorials, picnic tables and open areas.. The four local schools provide additional playground equipment, tennis and basketball courts, skateboarding areas and an outdoor box for lacrosse and road hockey.
Skate Board Park
In 2004 a new ice arena was built in the City of Armstrong. The facility includes a full length ice surface and stadium seating. Active minor hockey and figure skating organizations provide programs for boys and girls at all levels. There are many hockey groups from ladies hockey to oldtimers that call this arena their home. This facility runs in the summer season without an ice surface and from April to July is home to the Minor, Senior and Master Lacrosse leagues.
Hassen Memorial Arena:
This facility is now home to many different activities from senior to minor lacrosse to bookings for indoor trade shows. The Armstrong Spallumcheen Chamber of Commerce uses this facility for an annual trade show event and receives attention from other organizations like equine events, farmers markets etc. If you are interested in booking this facility with it's multi-purpose dry floor and available meeting room, please contact the Armstrong Parks & Recreation Commission at 250-546-9456 or check out their website at www.icesports.com.
This community hall seats 175 persons for banquets and has an adjoining theatre with stage and fixed, raised seating for 160 persons. This facility can be utilized for small seminars and conferences requiring seating space and adjoining dining/dancing facilities. The local amateur Asparagus Theatre, hosts several theatrical productions each year for the enjoyment of the public. The main hall is equipped with banquet facilities and utilized for wedding receptions, banquet/dance functions, fitness classes, etc. For additional information or to make reservations, contact the Commission office at 250-546-9456
Fairgrounds and Barns:
Located within walking distance of the downtown core, pool, park and
playground, is the busiest facility in the community during the months of April to October. These facilities cater to the animal enthusiast with many organizations hosting horse and livestock shows. The facilities include two indoor show-rings, two outdoor show-rings, 210 box stalls for stabling horses, indoor stabling for cattle, swine and goats, grandstand seating for 3,000 persons, public washrooms with shower facilities and camping areas complete with water and power supply. So if you enjoy exhibiting your horsemanship skills or observing others demonstrating their abilities, the Armstrong-Spallumcheen Fairgrounds is the place to be. Commencing early Saturday mornings, your entire weekend could be spent enjoying the activities on the fairgrounds. The local Farmers' Market provides a vast assortment of in season fruits and vegetables, bedding plants and flowers, crafts, home baking, entertainment and friendly chat with your next door neighbour.
Organizations using the facilities are most happy to have spectators and throughout the summer you can delight in petting miniature horses, llamas, alpacas and rabbits, or observing dog agility and flyball trials, reining and horse shows of every breed imaginable. 4-H Youth are very active in this community and you can find them at the fairgrounds several times a year demonstrating their expertise with their projects. Most events at the fairgrounds are free of charge and everyone is welcome. You can then complete the day with a swim in the pool and a picnic in the park. An exquisite outdoor heated facility which is open from late May to September 1st. The pool offers a complete learn-to-swim program during July and August with hours set aside for the enjoyment of swimming in an outdoor atmosphere. Public swimming information can be obtained from 250-546-9456.
School Gymnasiums and Classrooms:
Through an agreement with the local School District, after hour use of school facilities is administered through the Commission. Okanagan University College provides a variety of night school activities from basket weaving and Spanish lessons to adult sports such as volleyball, badminton and basketball.
Armstrong Curling Club:
A non profit society which provides curling for all ages, this active group operates from October to March with leagues and instruction for ladies, men, mixed, junior and senior members.
