The Township of Spallumcheen Chief Election Officer requires interested and experienced applicants to assist in the 2022 Township of Spallumcheen General Local Election and School Election as election officials (poll clerks).  This requirement is contingent on there being more candidates than positions available making an election necessary (aka. would not be required if the Council and School Trustee is elected by Acclamation).

The position pays an honorarium of $300 for the following:

  • Mandatory Training (tentatively scheduled for Thursday, September 22, 2022 – TBD);
  • Full Election Day on Saturday, October 15, 2022 from a minimum of 7:30 am to 8:30 pm; and
  • two 15-minute rest periods and one 30-minute dinner break (contingent on voter lineups).

To be considered for this position you must:

  • Be legally entitled to work in BC;
  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age;
  • Be fluent in English, other languages an asset;
  • Be responsible for your own reliable transportation to and from the voting station;
  • Attend a mandatory training session;
  • Not be related to any candidate running for office in the general election, and not actively working for any election campaign or candidate;
  • Have election experience (local government preferred);
  • Have strong knowledge of the area (and Township boundaries); and
  • Be willing to comply with all voting station, Township, Provincial and Federal health and safety regulations in place at the time of voting.

Election Officials are responsible for:

  • Setting up the voting place and stations including voting booths, posting signs and notices;
  • Greeting voters, directing voters to the proper line ups, and explaining the voting process;
  • Dealing tactfully and courteously with the public;
  • Verifying voters, verifying identification, explaining the voter process, and issuing ballots;
  • Tallying voter books with number of ballots, packing equipment and supplies and closing the voting place; and
  • Cleaning the voting stations, booths and supplies periodically as required.

Working Conditions:

  • May not leave the voting place during the shift;
  • Must provide own non-perishable afternoon meal;
  • Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time during the workday (approximately 13 hours);
  • Are recommended to bring layers of clothing, dress business casual and may want to bring a cushion to sit on; and
  • Must be willing to stay beyond the hours if required due to unforeseen circumstances.
