The Chief Election Officer for the Township of Spallumcheen Municipal Election is seeking reliable, civic minded individuals to serve as Poll Clerks for the 2026 Municipal and School Board Election. Successful applicants will be hired for the election only. Job Description

Poll Clerks (PC) are responsible for supporting the administration of the General Local Election by completing and maintaining the voting book and other related documents, accounting for and securing all voting materials and participating in the initial count at the end of the General Voting Day. 

 

Please Note: The requirement for PCs is contingent on there being more candidates than Council and Trustee positions available, making an election necessary (i.e.. would not be required if the Council and School Trustee is elected by Acclamation).

 

Key Information

  • Must be available to attend a mandatory paid training session;
  • Must not be related to any candidate running for office in the general election;
  • Must not actively be working for any election campaign or candidate; and
  • Must have the ability to be a non-partisan representative for the Township of Spallumcheen & K̓wsaltktnéws ne Secwepemcúl’ecw School District No. 83.

 

Experience and Skills Required

To be considered for this position you must:

  • Be legally entitled to work in BC and be a minimum of 18 years of age;
  • Be fluent in English, other languages an asset;
  • Have reliable transportation to and from the voting station;
  • Previous election experience an asset (local government preferred);
  • Have strong knowledge of the Township and other areas in the Regional District of North Okanagan;
  • Have strong organizational skills and ability to print legibly; and
  • Ability to understand and follow directions, written instructions or checklists.

 

Duties Include

PCs are responsible for:

  • Taking responsibility for the voting book, voting materials and equipment;
  • Setting up the voting place and stations including voting booths, posting signs and notices;
  • Greeting voters, directing voters to the proper line ups, and explaining the voting process;
  • Dealing tactfully and courteously with the public;
  • Verifying voters, verifying identification, explaining the voter process, and issuing ballots;
  • Ongoing tallying of voter books with number of ballots, and packing equipment and supplies at the time of closing the voting place;
  • Rotating from Voting Stations to Vote Tabulator Stations as required; and
  • Cleaning the voting stations, booths and supplies periodically as required.

 

Special Working Conditions

  • During the General Local Election Day, PCs may not leave the voting place during their shift;
  • PCs will be provided with a morning snack, dinner, coffee, tea and water. Other meals or food items must be provided by the PC.
  • PCs must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time during the workday (approximately 13 hours);
  • It is recommended to bring layers of clothing (comfortable business casual) and a cushion to sit on; and
  • Must be willing to stay beyond the 13 hours, if required, due to unforeseen circumstances. An hourly rate will be provided.

 

Compensation Rates

The position pays an honorarium of $324 for the following:

  • Mandatory Training (tentatively scheduled for Thursday, September 24, 2026 – TBD);
  • Full Election Day on Saturday, October 17, 2026 for 13 hours commencing at 7:30 am to 8:30 pm.Two 15-minute rest periods and one 30-minute dinner break will be provided.
  • Any time approved by the Chief Election Officer or Deputy Chief Election Officer past the 13 hours will be an hourly rate discussed at the time of hiring.
