The Township of Spallumcheen is looking to enhance its support of local farmers in the North Okanagan while providing additional opportunities for economic development. This year, the Township received funding from the provincial and federal governments through a grant program administered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC to complete a feasibility study for three parcels located within the South Spallumcheen Industrial Area. The study aims to determine if agri-industry uses can be supported in the area.

Please take a few moments to complete the survey here:

What is agri-industry?

Agricultural industry, often referred to as agri-industry, uses are those that complement and/or support a local agricultural economy by producing, selling, or supplying agricultural products and/or services. Agri-industry exists in many forms, including but not limited to:

  • Food processing plants (e.g. milk, cheese, jams, juices, flour, grains)
  • Slaughterhouses/abattoirs
  • Fruit and vegetable packing houses
  • Cold storage facilities
  • Distilleries, breweries, wineries
  • Manufacturing of farm machinery and equipment

Where is the study area?

As shown in the map below, three parcels of land located in the southeast of Spallumcheen along Highways 97A and 97 will be explored in this study.

How will agri-industry uses be determined?

The Township is engaged with Urban Systems Ltd. and Zbeetnoff Agro-Environmental Consulting Inc. to complete the feasibility study that will identify if agri-industry uses are viable for the study area. The final report will outline why or why not agri-industry can be supported, the conclusion for which will derive from consideration of:

  • Feedback from the farming community and existing agri-industry businesses
  • Feedback from the Agricultural Land Commission, Ministry of Agriculture, and the Regional District of North Okanagan
  • Compatibility with existing and anticipated future land uses
  • Servicing infrastructure constraints/impacts
  • Environmental constraints/impacts
  • Traffic constraints/impacts
