The Township of Spallumcheen is committed to promoting water conservation to ensure the sustainable use of our water resources, including the aquifers and creeks that supply our drinking water. Like many regions around the world, we’ve experienced water scarcity issues due to population growth, climate change, and pressure on water supplies from neighboring regions. As a resident, you can play an important role in preserving our water supply by implementing water-saving practices at home.
Aquifers are underground layers of soil or rock that contain water and can be impacted by drought, population growth, and climate change. They’re very important for communities like Spallumcheen that rely on agriculture, as they also provide water for crops, livestock, and other farm activities.
If aquifers or creeks are overused or contaminated, they can become unusable and cause serious problems for the community. This can lead to water shortages, reduced crop yields, and harm the environment. To prevent this, it’s important to protect and manage aquifers and creeks responsibly by monitoring water use, reducing waste, and avoiding harmful chemicals that can pollute the groundwater.
The map to the left shows all of the aquifers located within the Township of Spallumcheen.
By conserving water, we can ensure we have enough water to meet our needs today and, in the future, while also protecting our water sources. Conserving water means using it wisely and not wasting it unnecessarily. This can be done by making small changes in our daily habits, such as turning off the tap while brushing our teeth, fixing leaks, using water-efficient appliances, and planting drought-resistant plants.
1.
Fix leaks: Check your faucets, toilets, and pipes for leaks and fix them promptly.
2.
Shorten Showers: A five-minute shower uses much less water than a bath. Install a water-efficient showerhead to reduce water usage even further.
3.
Turn off the tap: Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth, shaving, washing your face, or washing dishes.
4.
Install a rainwater harvesting system: Install a rainwater harvesting system to collect rainwater for your garden and outdoor use.
5.
Water plants and lawns wisely: Water plants and lawns in the early morning or late evening to minimize evaporation and consider using drought-resistant plants.
6.
Run full loads: Run the dishwasher and washing machine only when they are full.
7.
Fix Sprinklers: Check and adjust sprinklers to avoid watering sidewalks and driveways.
8.
Use water efficient appliances: Choose appliances with a high Water Efficiency Labeling and Standards (WELS) rating. This includes dishwashers, washing machines, & showerheads.
9.
Change up outdoor chores: Use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways and sidewalks, wash your pets outside on the lawn so your grass also gets watered, or use a bucket and a sponge to wash your car instead of a running hose.
10.
